About Chicken

There are four kinds of chickens at Fields of Freedom. The Sussex chickens are the big white ones. The black chickens are Forest Hens, the brown chicken are of the Isla variety and then the silkie chickens who varies in colors, but is easy to spot due to their different feathers.

The chickens came to Fields of Freedom when the sanctuary made an agreement with one of Denmark’s biggest hobby farm poultry breeders to take any birds left unsold at the end of their selling season in late fall.

This kind of business breeds thousands of different types of waterfowl and poultry and drives them around Denmark to be collected at drop-off points across the country. On this trip, the birds can spend up to five hours crushed into tiny plastic crates in the back of a scary and noisy van. Every year, at the end of the selling season, any birds that are left unsold and deemed unfit to breed are sent to the slaughterhouse.

The chickens at Fields of Freedom walk around freely among the other animals and can often be seen perched on tall objects. At night, for their safety they are kept indoors in their own part of the stables.
