Bertha was 7 years old when she came to the sanctuary in 2017, when she was sent to slaughter in Germany. She had been bred from and used as a working donkey all her life and both her body and soul were tired and worn out. She had never once had the chance to live with another donkey after being taken from her own mother when she was just 6 months old, but all of that changed when she arrived here at Fields of Freedom.
After a short settling in time she was introduced to the rest of the donkey herds and soon fell in love with another rescue donkey, Thor, who was already living here at the sanctuary. These two became best friends and can never be found far apart from each other.
Bertha is a kind-hearted donkey who gets along with nearly everyone in the herds, but she has never be fond of pigs or chickens although she does tolerate them.
